What We Are
Apelsinovka is a web site created by the Russian Club at UCI, which is designed to provide a portal into the Russian-speaking community of Orange County and Southern California. Our goal is to promote cultural, academic, and social activities geared toward both Russian-speaking people and those interested in the various cultures represented by Russian-speaking people.
Who We Are
We are a non-profit organization who welcomes leadership of not only UCI students, faculty, and staff, but also community members who want to participate in our endeavors. The Russian Club is an entity that inherently experiences changing leadership over time, but the Club itself has remained a strong force in both the UCI and surrounding communities and a will to continue to do so. The goal of the Club is to continue its existence and viability without regard to any particular individuals associated with it.

What We Do
Our mission is three-fold:
1. To be a democratic organization of UCI-affiliated individuals coming together to do the following:
Socialize
Plan events-social, cultural, academic, etc.
Inform the community of available resources
2. Provide a free information service to the Russian community regarding a variety of resources, including:
UCIRC Club events
Community events
Community resources
Local news
3. Support, in whatever way we can, the continuation of Russian Studies at UCI. In this way, we do the following:
Provide annual scholarships
Provide outreach to UCI and the community
Co-sponsor events with the Program in Russian
Outreach to high schools about Russians at UCI
In the past, we have held a variety of events catering to differing tastes and preferences. Examples of some events are
Ukrainian & Russian dance performances, poetry readings, academic lectures & conferences, bard song concerts,
classical music performances, social gatherings, Durak tournaments, private parties, and our renowned Diskotekas. Currently, there are groups of people working on starting a KVN team, and a dance team. We welcome any suggestions about other events to hold.
How Money is handled
Proceeds from events that are profitable go towards two primary purposes: first, they provide the Club with funds to hold events that are not profitable financially, but that are worthwhile events; second, a large portion of our fundraising activities are gathered to provide student scholarships to UCI students studying Russian language, literature, history, and/or culture. We wish to spark more interest in Russian Studies via this effort.
There has been some accusations that a particular person in our organization has been doing their activities for personal profit. This has never been the case nor will it ever be the case. The finances are handled by an un-elected, proven to be trustworthy, student treasurer who works closely with the Associated Students of UCI Accountant to make sure all funds are handled legally and above board. The person whos reputation has been tarnished has in fact donated several thousand dollars in money, time, and skill to this Club and we do not appreciate any false accusations against them.
